Childhood
Probably born in Paris on October 22, 1844 under the name Henriette-Rosine. Her mother, Julie Bernhardt, was a young, Jewish courtesan. Her father was unknown and rumored to be a young naval officer named Morel, from Le Havre. Bernhardt’s mother did not take an active role in her growth and sent her to live with a nurse in the Breton countryside.
